On your marks, get set, GO!

PYC 2010 season is now in gear. The docks are in, Old Blue has a face lift, the whaler interior has been updated, the chimney will be repaired, our new trophy cases are in place and look great, and the bug out race will have occurred before you even receive this issue of the Telltales.

This season promises to be a great one if our reinstated Spring Recall event is any indication. Our Race Committee Chairman Bill Ziegler arranged this exciting event, which included a lively discussion on boat speed and tactics put together by Greg Fischer. We had 35 members attend. The highlight of the afternoon was a chilli cook-off among the past commodores. There were 8 entries and their merits were HOTLY contested. I tried to bribe some of the judges with alternate work assignments that were really cushy options but it did not seem to work. Jim Allen won the event.

More importantly Bill outlined the sailing program for the year. Copies of the racing schedule are now available, see Bill This year you can qualify for a series by sailing at least half of the races, rather than 2/3rds. Many other changes for the better have also been made. See details in this issue or on the website www.pyc54.org. Also, please sign-up for race committee duty before you are assigned dates. Each skipper is required to act as race committee for at least 2 dates.

Getting started in the spring is always a major undertaking. Special thanks as always to Andy Monique who puts our docks together and to Jim Allen who repaired the water main, which broke during the winter, so we would have water at the spring work party.

There is still work to be done, so if you missed the work party, there are many alternate assignments available, contact me (248-248-2991).

It’s time to uncover your boats, put your stickers on and get out on the water. Stickers can be found in a box in the kitchen. Time to stop writing and start sailing! Hope to see you all at the club soon.

Spring is officially here, so it’s time to get back on the water. YEAH! We are gearing up for another fun filled year at PYC. The board has been busy preparing for the 2010 season.

Our Race Committee Chair, Bill Ziegler is preparing for a spring re-call event scheduled to occur late afternoon on Sunday after spring work party. Bill has a guest speaker coming and dinner following the speaker. (More to come on this topic). Bill and Tom Crosby have purchased 2 beautiful trophy cases to display our perpetual trophies, which are already in the clubhouse. A new mark has been purchased so we will have marks that will remain inflated for the entire race.

The Boat Committee, which includes Ed Diakow and myself, have plans to repaint the deck and cabin top of Old Blue a nice bright white, which should last for many years. The whaler has already had it’s outboard repaired, including a refinished pro-peller and is currently in the shop getting a fiberglass console and bench seat installed. Mark Kramer has agreed to donate time to com-pletely rewire the whaler so the electrical system will be in working order.

Wow! Can you believe it. PYC has welcomed 24, count’em 24, new members in 2009.I believe Bob Mathers has set a new record for new members and there is still time to join. What is even better, our new associates have become active at PYC. Already many have volunteered to help at club functions and work parties. If you are a new member, welcome, and if you are an old member and see a new face at the club be sure to stop and say hello.

Not only are we welcoming new families but some of our old families have grown this season. The Flack’s, Warner’s, and Humphrey’s all had babies this year. Fortunately all were born before the Whitecap, allowing new Moms and Dads to sail in the event. Congratulations to you all. As a special treat, Ryan Flacks' daughter Marissa was present to see his family win the Whitecap regatta with 2 first place finishes.

I have just finished entering race results from this past week and suddenly realized that we already completed the summer series of races and are into the fall series. The summer is going fast, as it always does, but what a summer it has been!

We have succeeded in racing two races on Wednesday night, had successful adult and junior sailing programs, a wonderful anniversary party with 150 attendees, can boast of the publication of PYC’s 75 year history book, (copies still available from Joan Green), a more organized and spacious parking area, and a interior face lift for the club house, to name just a few accomplishments.

I was out at the club on Sunday ( May 3) to get ready for the Bug-out regatta. It was a beautiful clear day with a steady breeze. All the hoists were in place and the grounds looked beautiful. It was an ideal day to enjoy the club. What seemed to be missing were crowds of members anxious to get sailing after a long winter.

2009 is already shaping up to be an exciting year at PYC and the docks are not scheduled to go in for several week! We had 6 boats entered at the St Petersburg Mid-Winter regatta. Mark Allen and crew Mark Whatley and Beth Groesbeck posted a remarkable 14 place finish in a fleet of 58 boats. Included in their series were a remarkable 5th and 7th place finishes in the best of 5 race series. Mike Hecker and crew posted a new course record for being towed in and out of the harbor 3 times in 1 day due to lack of wind.

In order to write my first column for the 2009 telltales, I went to the club for inspiration. What I saw was not just a snow covered building and grounds, but a hibernating institution resting up for another busy year. It’s 75th year to be exact. PYC was waiting to spring alive and provide another wonderful year for its members.

Lightnings_around_mark

Just around the corner activity will be stirring with the dock guys preparing for dock in day. Stanchions being prepared for insertion over their bases in Cass Lake, followed by a couple of people in an old beatenup row boat with blue oars, struggling and cursing in an attempt to get them in their proper places. Once in place, a large group will appear and begin moving very long rusty looking poles on strange looking dollies out to the harbor to lay across the supports. Then miraculously, a large pile of wooden sections sitting on the sidewalk will turn into a pathway out over the water, also being transported on very odd looking carts.

As we pass the halfway point of the 2008 sailing season, it is appropriate to take time to reflect on the progress we have made with some of our accomplishments. By all accounts, the task of installing the dock and hoists went exceedingly well. Andy Monique’s engineering modifications of the pontoon boat provided greater buoyancy and stability and his addition of the new electrical winch made installation of the large, cumbersome deepwater hoists even easier. Coordination of efforts between haulers and parts wranglers reduced the amount of unnecessary foot traffic on the docks and the installation was completed in good time.

Junior Sailing is going great guns and PYC has signed the agreement with PSEF for boat and property use.
